Student earnings are not automatically exempt from tax withholding, including Federal Work-Study earnings.
As a result, all students are encouraged to complete/submit Tax Withholding Exemption Forms to the Office of Student Employment Services, Garland Hall 72. These forms must be completed so that your employer (JHU) can withhold the correct amount of tax from your paycheck.
The amount of tax withheld is based on the number of allowances you claim. If you are uncertain of the amount to claim, you can use the "Personal Allowances Worksheet" to obtain the number (found on form W-4); or seek advice from your family or a certified tax accountant. Please note that the staff of Student Employment Services and/or the JHU Tax Office may NOT provide tax advice.
If you plan to claim EXEMPT from taxes, thus instructing the University NOT to withhold taxes from your paycheck (OR) you wish to change your present tax status, there is a Refiling Deadline; this deadline changes annually. It is important to note that EXEMPT status last for only 1-calendar year, automatically expiring on 12/31.
For 2010, the REFILING DEADLINE IS as follows:
