After Graduation

Homewood students who wish to continue working at the same job/same rate of pay AFTER completing their degree requirements may do so if the hiring department agrees; this applies to U.S. citizens only. International students see NOTE below.

The conversion would be treated as a change of status from 'Student' to 'Temporary Staff Position' and the employment could not exceed six months.

To view the guidelines for employers to complete the conversion, please click the appropriate button from the Employer Handbook > Graduation (click here)

NOTE: Ph.D. candidates who are U.S. citizens have officially completed their degree requirements AFTER the Graduate Board approves his/her candidacy, AND after the President has signed off on the official degree roster. This occurs twice an academic year - in late November or early December, and in May.

International graduate students who wish to continue working for their graduate department for the remainder of the semester after submitting their dissertation to the Binding Office must apply for and receive approval from the INS (i.e. Optional Practical Training). Once the OPT is approved the student will receive an EAD card, this allows him or her to continue working at the University. If the OPT is not approved, the student is NOT eligible to work for the University. For more information see Employer Handbook > Graduation > International (click here)
