Concurrent Employment

Concurrent Employment occurs when a student has more than one job within the University. This includes students who are employed by multiple departments as well as students who hold multiple positions within the same department.

Key features concerning Concurrent Employment are:

  • Each position the student holds within JHU is assigned a separate personnel number. However, employees will only have one person ID.

  • Student employees with multiple positions will only be processed on one payroll. Tax calculations will be calculated on the total earnings of the multiple positions.

Examples of Concurrent Employment are:

  • Student paid multiple hourly rates within the same department.

Ex. Hussein is a Student Tutor for two courses; each pays a different hourly rate. One course pays $10.00 per hour and the other pays $12.50 per hour. As a result, he has multiple positions in Academic Advising. Each different rate of pay is treated as a separate job; each job is assigned a different personnel number in SAP.

  • Student has multiple jobs within the University.

Ex. Becky works for Dean's Office as a Student Office Assistant and also works for Digital Media as a Graphics Designer. Both are hourly positions.

  • Student paid a Fellowship (Non-Employee) and a Salary simultaneously.

Ex. Tatiana has been awarded an Owen Fellowship which is paid semi-monthly. Her graduate department is also paying her a semi-monthly salary for research. The Fellowship must be treated as a Non-Employee position whereas the salary is treated as a Graduate Student position.
